New Player Registration InformationHere is some frequently asked questions about registration for new players for the 2010 - 2011 hockey season: Who can register? The Association accepts registrations for male and female players aged 4 - 20. When can I register my child?Open registration sessions are held several times a year. In order to attend a registration session, you must be pre-registered with the registrar. To pre-register, complete the Pre-Registration form and send it in to the Registrar with the required fee. Once the form and fee are received, the Registrar will contact you as to when your registration date will take place. What do I need to register my child? The following requirements must be met to complete registration: A child may only be registered in person by the custodial parent with whom he/she resides. This residence must be within the boundaries of Surrey Minor Hockey Association. The boundaries are:
A child aged 7 and older must attend the registration session to sign the registration form. You must bring a photo copy of the child's birth certificate and 1 photo copy each of two different proofs of residence from the following: BC Hydro, cablevision, credit card or bank statement. Phone statements are not accepted. We retain the photo copies for our records, so please do not bring originals. Payment in full by cheque payable to Surrey Minor Hockey Association or money order must be submitted at the registration session. Cash payments are not accepted. What ice times do we get?All teams will be provided with one game and one practice each week. It is impossible to determine at this time what the day or times will be as the ice is not booked, and much is determined by the final registration numbers. Last season we had 1050 players on a total of 65 teams. Most age levels are also eligible to attend skill skates. You will receive a letter mid / late August outlining dates and times of your child's "evaluation" skates, which begin early in September. Once the evaluations are complete, the players are rated from top to bottom. The coaches will then attend a draft night where they will pick their teams taking turns from top to bottom. This is done to ensure the teams are picked as fairly as possible and are as balanced in skill level as possible. Players in Hockey 1 do not play competitive games. The focus is on fun and skill. For players in Hockey 2-3-4, teams are picked in November, to allow ample time for evaluations and proper placement. Once the coach has picked his team, he will phone all the players with information about the first ice time. Teams are together and on the ice very early in October, sometimes even late in September. Once the team is together, the coach should hold a team meeting, and this is where the fun begins. How can I help with my child's team?Volunteers are the key to our success. Management of a team consists of: Head Coach, Assistant Coaches, Team Manager and Team Parent. Team Manager: This is one of the most important positions on the team. During the course of the season a Team Manager will be applying for tournaments, organizing fundraising, getting exhibition games, game numbers and permission slips. There are various team duties which must be done throughout the season and it is the responsibility of the Team Manager to delegate these duties to the parents on the team. You will be dealing with parents, Coaches, Division Managers, League Managers and other Team Managers. Managing a team can be a time consuming effort but very rewarding. Team Parent: A very important job on the team, as assistant to the Team Manager in ensuring the smooth operation of the team. The team parent will assist in all areas of fundraising, monitoring team funds, telephoning parents as required and providing assistance to the Team Manager where requested. Parents will be requested to take turns selling 50/50 tickets at home games, along with running the time clock and scorekeeping. More information on team management functions can be found on our web site under Rules and Guidelines Section E-Team Management. What does my registration fee cover?Member registration fees cover association assigned ice times, referee fees, approved training, jerseys, etc. Any additional activities and the purchase of team socks are funded solely by the team. These additional activities can consist of: Tournaments, extra ice times, Christmas and Year end parties etc. These costs can be funded by fundraising or by monthly dues (e.g. $35/month). Team management, along with parents will decide which option best suits the team. Where do we play and practice? All association supplied game and practice times are held at 4 arena's within the City of Surrey
