Information for New On- Ice Officials

So....You want to be an on-ice Official??

Participants must be at least 12 years old as of December 31, 2008 to become a Level 1 official and 16 years old by December 31, 2008 to qualify for Level 2. A non-refundable $15 registration fee is due at the time of pre-registration. A copy of your birth certificate will also need to be provided for proof of age. It will need to be a copy as it will not be returned.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come basis until the maximum intake has been reached. The process for becoming an on-ice official is outlined below:

Step 1

Pre-Registration begins April 15, 2008 at 7:30AM. You may pre-register on or after that date by contacting Jamie Versteeg (SMHA Referee In Chief) at 604-951-9772. No email registrations will be accepted. Please leave your name, phone number, birth date and home address.

Registration day for all Pre-Registered applicants will be either late April or early May 2008 at a location and time TBA.

For further information, please contact:

Jamie Versteeg
phone: 604-951-9772
email: Referee in chief

Pre-Registrations will be accepted by telephone only between April 15, 2008 and July 31, 2008, or until the class has been filled, whichever comes first. A wait list may be established.

Step 2

The next step involves a try-out process, which includes a skating test, an interview and an verbal examination. Applicants must pass all these components before being invited to attend the Carding Clinic. Applicants must be available to attend the try-out and clinic in its entirety or their application will be concluded. NO EXCEPTIONS

Each individual applicant's skate/interview/exam times will be phoned/e-mailed to them; this process will take place in August 2008. Your time will be arranged privately over the phone or by email by the end of July.

Step 3

Once the try-out process has concluded, successful applicants will then be invited to attend the Carding Clinic Aug 2008. The sessions are not confirmed but they will probably be between 6:00PM and 10:00PM each day. Exact details to follow via mail or telephone. This clinic will include classroom and on-ice instruction. Full payment for the clinic will be due at that time. Every successful applicant MUST complete each session as per Hockey Canada's ruling in order to be carded. If for any reason the applicant cannot attend any portion of the clinic, he/she will not be eligible to write the exam or become an official this season and no fees will be refunded by BC Hockey.

Good Luck !!
